David Reimer, US Ambassador-designate to Sierra Leone

US President Donald J Trump has named David Reimer as the United States new ambassador to Sierra Leone, replacing Maria Brewer who has been here since October 2017.

The new ambassador is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service in the US.

According to the White House website, Reimer was nominated on the 10th of June this year. Last week his name was submitted to the Senate for approval.

Reimer is among several appointments President Trump has made to shake up things in his administration as he runs for re-election in November this year.

Reimer will be coming with some experience about how things operate in the West African region, having worked as a Director in the Office of West Africa Affairs at the State Department.

He also worked as the Deputy Chief of Mission on behalf of the US in Nouakchott, Mauritania.

Currently, he is the US Ambassador to Mauritius and Seychelles.

Brewer took up her current post as the US Ambassador to Sierra Leone in October 2017, just five months before the country’s president and legislative elections. She replaced John Hoover who also served for three years.

Like Reimer, Brewer had had experience in the region before her appointment having served in countries like Nigeria in a different capacity.

The US Embassy in Sierra Leone has not released any statement on the new appointment. It is not clear where Brewer will head to next.
