Health Ministry says

Ministry of Agriculture together with the  Ministry of Health and Sanitation has in a press Release reported an outbreak of ANTHRAX Disease  that has been discovered among animals in the Port Loko district in the North- Western Region of Sierra Leone.               

 According to the report, ANTHRAX is a serious infectious disease that commonly affects farm, domestic and wild animals. They said people can get sick with ANTHRAX if they come in contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products which can cause severe illness in both humans and animals. 

According to them, the disease can be treated adding that government is evaluating its options in order to institute restrictions on the production, processing and marketing of  livestock and livestock products, mainly cattle, sheep and goats.

While comprehensive set of restrictions is being considered, the ministry of Agriculture together with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation is advising members of the general public to report to officials of these two Ministries any case of sick cattle, sheep and goats in their household, neighborhood or community. 

The report further stated that no human case has been confirmed and that the general public should not make any attempt to administer treatment on sick animals on their own or eat them or their products.
